He has won gold in Cheminnovation (a chemical engineering competition conducted by IIT-Kharagpur) for presenting the most viable waste recycle strategy for a Bhilai based aluminum plant. Aashish was also a member of the product design team that developed a RFID-SAW model for library management at IIT-Kharagpur.

As a part of his sophomore summer project in The Energy and Resources Institute, Bangalore, Aashish worked on Thermal, Mechanical and Biodegradation Studies of Cellulose Acetate Phthalate-Chitosan Bio-Nano Composites. Aashish is also a computing aficionado and is an expert at modeling tools like AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Matlab and at programming languages like C, C++, BASIC.

Ruchi and Aashish will represent India at an educational tour to be held at Leverkusen, Germany from November 08-14, 2009.

On being selected as the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy, the candidates had the following to say:

Ruchi Soni:
“Winning the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE) Program would serve as a springboard for me to expand the horizons of my theoretical environmental knowledge base and help translate it into practical knowledge, coupled with the unique multi-cultural dimension it has that would help me make contacts with like-minded contemporaries from all over the world. The BYEE program will help me strengthen my commitment towards the environment and my belief in what Mahatma Gandhi said ‘Be the change you want to see in the world”.

Aashish Gaurav:

“I think it is a privilege to represent India at the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Program 2009 and I am looking forward to the exposure to scientists, technocrats and experts in various aspects of sustainable development on an international stage that it would bring.
I believe the Programme is a significant opportunity for me
to share sustainable development ideas and prototypes with budding talents around the globe. I hope to learn about trends and perspectives in the field of environmental protection and sustainability and raise awareness of sustainable development by passing on the impressions, experience and insights gained”.

About BYEEP
As a research-based enterprise, Bayer also places great emphasis on promoting science education for young people and has therefore been committed to promoting youth environmental programs for many years. In cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Bayer organizes and promotes a number of specific projects which aim to improve knowledge about the environment among young people and support them in their environmental commitment. One of these projects is the “Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Program”.

Under this program, selected students go to Germany on a weeklong study tour to experience how environmental protection is practiced by people, government and industry in one of the leading countries with regards to technology and environmental awareness. The visit to the global headquarters of the Bayer Group in Germany demonstrates how companies – through product development and responsible manufacturing processes – contribute to sustainable development.

Initiated in 1998 as a local project in Thailand, the program included participants from the Philippines and Singapore from 2001 on. The program was further extended to India in 2002, China in 2003, Poland, Indonesia, Korea, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador in 2004, Peru as well as Kenya in 2005, to Vietnam and Malaysia in 2006, and to Turkey in 2007 and South Africa in 2008. In 2009, Chile joins the program for the first time.
