National Scrabble Championship reaches its grand finale!
~ Participants from across the
country battle it out in Mumbai ~
Mumbai, 25. May 2009 – The
Grand Finals of the Bayer National Scrabble Championship 2009
under the aegis of the Scrabble Association of India were
held at Juhu-Vile Parle Gymkhana. These finals witnessed leading
wordsmiths from across the country fighting it out for the
top honours at this prestigious tournament. The winner of
the Bayer National Scrabble Championship 2009 is Sherwin Rodrigues,
age 19 from Mumbai.
Speaking at the occasion, Kaikobad Mistry, Chief Financial
Officer, Bayer Group in India said, “Bayer in India
is pleased to be associated with this prestigious annual event.
Traditionally, the Bayer Group worldwide has promoted cultural
and sporting activities since the company was founded. With
this sponsorship, we aim to encourage and support Scrabble
as well.”
The ecstatic winner of the Bayer National Scrabble Championship
2008, Sherwin said, “It is a wonderful feeling winning
this prestigious championship. I am indebted to Bayer for
organising such an event and I hope that they can make it
happen every year.” The winner this year will represent
India at the World Championships to be held at Malaysia.
This year the ultimate brain-teasing word game championship
reached out to a huge number of participants across India,
with maximum participation from Mumbai, followed by Bengaloroo.
Five children participated in the junior division (Under -
15). The youngest participant was 11 years old and the oldest
65 years old at this championship. Professionals like Doctors,
Lawyers, IAS officers, Chartered Accountants, Journalists,
MBA students and housewives competed for the coveted title.
The tournament was held in Mumbai on May 22, 23 and 24, 2009.
