Bayer – Proagro aims to eradicate child labour from their cotton seed
production farms in the state of Andhra Pradesh. For many years Bayer has
been pursuing a clear policy against child labor in all its forms. Child labor
is expressly prohibited in its contracts with the seed-producing farmers.
Bayer has also assumed the leadership role within the Indian seed producing
companies for the furtherance of such activities.
In the current growing season, some of the
initiatives that have been undertaken are:
• ‘Revitalizing education’ – establishing
‘Creative Learning Centres’ through a Non-Governmental Organization,
Naandi Foundation. The Creative Learning Centres will provide books and other
infrastructure to ensure adequate Naandi’s efforts will aim to integrate
children from cotton seed farms to mainstream education
• Improve learning facilities in Government Schools
• Incentives and bonus to farmers for not using children on their farms
• Sanctions against farmers who employ children
• Providing technical assistance to farmers to help increase yield
• Low interest credit to farmers through a designated bank
• Regular checks are conducted by the company and independent authorities
to ensure compliance to Bayer’s policy of “no child labour”
