Polycarbonates
(BU PCS)
Bayer MaterialScience is the global leader
in the production of polycarbonates, with an annual capacity
of 1.2 million metric tonne, by the end of 2006. The company
currently has world-scale production facilities in Krefeld-Uerdingen
in Germany, Antwerp in Belgium, Baytown in the US, Map Ta
Phut in Thailand, and Shanghai in China.
Makrolon® is the best-known brand within
the PCS portfolio. Other brands include the high-heat resistant
Apec® and various Makrolon® based blends such as Bayblend®
and Makroblend®. The outstanding properties of the blends
make it possible to adapt them individually to the requirements
of the particular application. The Polycarbonates unit also
markets PCS sheets made of Makrolon® and the PCS films
Makrofol® and Bayfol®. Makrolon® can reflect on
a history of success that goes back to more than 50 years,
something which is likely to continue in the future. The products
made of Makrolon® and its variants are employed in the
automotive industry, optical data storage and the electrical
and electronics segments. These products are frequently used
instead of glass for the construction of car roofs as it is
lighter, more shock resistant and offers much more freedom
to designers.
